Tony Gale Haberer

Empty Saddles

Tony was born February 5, 1946 in Plainview, but soon thereafter moved to Muleshoe, Texas. An All-Around Champion Cowboy and a gifted athlete’s life ended on March 22, 1969 in a tragic accident. Tony was killed in a plane crash he owned with Gary Tucker the 1969 bareback riding champion. Tony & Tom Moews had left the Lubbock Rodeo, along with Gary, who they had dropped off at Carlsbad, New Mexico and were flying to Mercedes for another rodeo. They flew into bad weather outside of Ft. Stockton.

His personal claim of his greatest accomplishment was the birth of his daughter Ronda Gale in 1967.

Though his time was short, he accomplished much in the rodeo arena and was indeed a cowboy. His rodeo skill and ability was proven in 1964 and 65 as All Around Champion, bareback, and bull riding in the AJRA. Joining the RCA after high school the impressive cowboy made his mark early on as the 1966 Rookie of the Year in the RCA, 1967 NFR Finals in the bareback and bull riding, 1968 in the NFR in the bull riding. Tony also won the 1968 Calgary bull riding title.
