Shanna grew up on a ranch under the guidance of world champion parents who are inductees in the Texas Rodeo Cowboys Hall of Fame. She started with quarter horse shows and junior rodeos at age 5. In the 1970s, she won AJRA world championships in barrel racing, pole bending, breakaway, ribbon roping, and all around, as well as the 4-H Finals and American Junior Quarter Horse World Show. She trained the only barrel racing Futurity horse. Shanna won high school finals in all events she entered – cutting, barrels, poles, and breakaway. A PRCA cardholder for 35+ years, she finished in the top 20 in the world standings five times. In 1984, she made the NFR.
