Phil Lyne was born in San Antonio, Texas, January 18, 1947, and started roping at the age of 4 years old. This, of course, led him to eventually compete in the Texas Youth Rodeo Association from age 4 to age 18 years of age; while in high school Phil competed in amateur rodeos and in many of these rodeos he would compete in all six events and would often win all six events.
After high school, Phil entered college as a member of the National Intercollegiate Association (NIRA). In 1968 he was Champion Calf Roper and All-Around Cowboy for Southwest Texas State University at the finals held in Sacramento, Ca., and in 1969 he was the NIRA Champion Calf Roper and All Around Cowboy for Southwest Texas State University at the finals in Deadwood, South Dakota. In 1969 Phil obtained his permit from the Rodeo Cowboys Association (RCA) and was the 1969 Rookie of the Year. In 1971 he won his first World Championships in Calf Roping and All-Around Cowboy; also in 1972 he won the World Championship in Calf Roping and again was All-Around Cowboy. He also won the National Finals average in Calf Roping and Bull Riding as well as the runner-up to the world in Bull Riding during 1972.
Other accomplishments included the Bill Linderman Memorial Award in 1970, 1971, 1972, and 1976. He was Champion Calf Roper and Steer Roper at the Windy Ryon Memorial Invitational Roping; also the Champion Calf Roper and Steer Roper at the Jim Bob Altizer Invitational Roping in Del Rio, Texas. He won the San Angelo Invitational Roping Fiesta as Champion Calf Roper and Champion Steer Roper in 1984. Proof of Phil’s great horsemanship was in 1971 during the world championship run when he roped off 47 different horses and still won the world.
In 1990 Phil won the World Championship in the Steer Roping and earned 10 trips to the National Finals Rodeo in Steer Roping starting in 1979, 1982, ’83, ’84, ’85, *86, *87, ’88, ’89, and 1990. Phil won the National Finals Steer Roping average twice, 1983 and again in 1986. He carded five trips to the National Finals Rodeo in Calf Roping during 1970 through 1974; and twice in Bull Riding during 1971 and 1972. Phil won the National Finals Rodeo average in both Bull Riding and Calf Roping events in 1972.
