Matt Austin, grew up with one goal, becoming a World Champion Bull Rider. With a grandfather, Boyd Austin, a father, Lonnie Austin and an uncle, Dennie Austin, who all participated in rodeos, it was no surprise that he chose this path.
Matt was born and raised in Wills Point, Texas and began rodeoing in youth associations at the age of 11, becoming a Youth Bull riding champion and from then on, he was setting records and achieving his dream. After graduating from Wills Point High School, Matt enrolled at Hill County College in Hillsboro, where he was a member of the college rodeo team, and won the Intercollegiate title in 2004. One of Matt’s mentors, 8X World Champion Bull Rider Donnie Gay, gave him the nickname “Poindexter”, because Matt was tall, thin, and always wore his glasses when he rode. The name stuck.
Matt is married to Christina Maples, and has 3 children, Kip, River Rose and Katch. They reside in South Central Texas. He works as a mechanic/welder for Vista Energy and enjoys raising cattle and horses. Matt likes playing the guitar and motivational speaking, and spending time with his family. Outside of being a Christian, his greatest accomplishment, besides being a World Champ, is his wife and kids. He feels truly blessed.
