Leonard was raised in Poteet, Texas, where he began his rodeo career at the age of four as his family were charter members of Texas Youth Rodeo Cowboys Association. He competed in showmanship, bareback riding, calf roping, ribbon roping, team roping, and steer wrestling. In 1972, he was awarded the TYRA Sportsmanship

Award. Leonard continued his rodeo career on the Tarleton State University rodeo team in 1975, 1976 and 1977 where he competed in steer wrestling in the Southwestern Region of the NIRA.

In 1979, he received his PRCA card and placed in the first round and average of San Antonio and then the next week he won a go round in Houston.  In May of 1979 Leonard started traveling to rodeo’s with Doug Hanover and got in the truck with Lloyd Hodges and Laddie Lewis. In 1979 he placed in enough PRCA rodeos to win the “PRCA Steer Wrestling Rookie of the Year”.

Other accomplishments include:

  • 1979 PRCA Steer Wrestling Rookie of the Year
  • Qualified for the Texas Circuit Finals in 1979, 1980, and 1982
  • Placed in Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston, Lake Charles, Sikeston, St. Louis, Laramie, Louisville, Ogden, Salt Lake City, Clear Lake, Ponca, Mobridge, Memphis, and Indianapolis
  • Placed in 17 other rodeo’s across Texas including Stephenville, Madisonville, Liberty, Del Rio, Jasper, Gladewater, Mesquite, Abilene, Longview, Dallas, Victoria, Edna, Rock Springs, Bandera, Mineral Wells, Bay City, Woodville, Houston and Freer.

Leonard Fluitt had an outstanding rodeo career and he retired in 1991. He currently holds a PRCA Gold Card that he is very proud of and cherishes the many life long friends that he met during his rodeo career.
