Bobby was born and raised and still lives in Kurten, Texas (10 miles east of Bryan) on land that has been in the Kurten family since the mid 1800’s. He and his wife Judy, daughter Jennifer and husband Philip, and granddaughter Jensyn live on the land his great grandfather owned. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in Bryan and Sam Houston State University. Bobby has worked cattle all his life and currently ranches in Brazos and Madison Counties. He has been associated with rodeos since he was a little boy, and has ridden bulls, bareback horses, and saddle broncs. He’s roped tie down, breakaway, ribbons, and both ends in the ream roping. He and some local cowboys competed in ranch rodeos for several years, and was Chute Boss at the Snook Texas rodeos and has judged many rodeos all around central Texas.
Bobby worked in banking throughout his career and retired from Capital Farm Credit in 2011. He has been given the Agricultural Producers Award by the Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce, and was a founding member of the Brazos County Extension Horse Committee. He served on the Board of Producers CO-OP in Bryan for 40 years and as Chairman of their Board for 30 years. He was awarded the Cooperator of the Year award in 2023.
He has maintained his connection with rodeos throughout the years and served as chairman of the Brazos De Dios Rodeo in the 1980’s. He is currently on the board of the Brazos Valley Fair and Rodeo and serves as chairman of the Rodeo Committee.
He also has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame since it moved to Fort Worth and is now Chairman of that board.
