John’s goals as a bull rider were to ride the bulls that had not been ridden and to make it to the National Finals Rodeo. He accomplished both of these, including two NFR appearances in 1975 and 1976.
His rodeo career includes winning the SRA All-Around title at the age of 18 and winning championships at Fort Smith, Arkansas on the bull HB of Cervi’s; Stephenville, Texas; the World’s Largest Jackpot Bull Riding in Ardmore, Oklahoma; as well as Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. He has placed at numerous rodeos including, Cheyenne and Houston, and he made a short-go at the Calgary Stampede.
Some of the great bulls he has ridden are Jim Shoulders’s Mighty Mouse, Cervi’s General Issimo, and Gerald Smith’s Butterbean.
John still supports the rodeo way of life, but his most prized possession is his family. He resides in Buffalo, Texas, with the love of his life, Sherry. They have been married for over 44 years. John and Sherry have two daughters, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
God bless cowboys and the cowboy way of life.
