Don Howell, a graduate of Sam Houston State University, grew up on a ranch in Central Texas near the town of Andice. Like many ranch kids, he had to try his hand at rodeo. Throughout high school and college, he rode bulls and bareback broncs at amateur and open rodeos primarily in Central Texas.
Don has said that, “Growing up on a ranch is something I wish every child could experience. It teaches you the value of life and many different skills.” He grew up with the western heritage way of life under the tutelage of several older cowboys including his father. “They taught me that your word is your bond.” Among the heroes of his youth was Johnny Boren, founder of the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame.
Howell served as President of the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame from 2006 to 2013, a period of unprecedented growth when the Hall moved from its long-time home in Belton to the Cowtown Coliseum in the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District. While the move proved very advantageous, such a move can be challenging. Don oversaw all aspects of the move with diplomacy, tact and deep dedication to Johnny Boren’s original vision. He continues to serve on the TRCHF Board as Immediate Past President.
